Reproduction of a poster by René Péan for the Moulin Rouge (early 1900s). When the Moulin Rouge opened in October 1889, the roller-coaster on the Boulevard des Capucines was a very popular attraction. The co-founder of the Moulin Rouge, Joseph Oller decided to develop “Les Nouvelles Montagnes Russes”* (*Roller-coaster) of Paris in the garden of the Moulin Rouge, which was also a big hit!
René Péan (1875-1955), a French painter and lithographer, designed numerous posters for the entertainement and leisure industry between 1895 and 1905.
