The Moulin Rouge opened it’s doors on October 6, 1889, and this is…the historic poster for this occasion. Chéret is considered to be the “father” of advertisement placards. The women of Chéret’s posters were joyous, elegant and lively Chéret’s laughing and provocative feminine figures meant a new conception of art as being of service to advertising. His success inspired an industry that saw the emergence of a new generation of poster designers and painters such as Charles Gesmar and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
